View original topic: Rear Shift Rod Removal Alternative? 71 Westy

I'm in the process of redoing the shift linkage on my 71 Westy. All parts have been removed with the exception of the rear shift rod. At the moment I don't have the facilities to drop the transmission to remove the rear shift rod. The front and rear nylon bushings are obviously shot sine the rear rod rests on the bottom of the shift rod "conduit".

Anyone have any clever ideas of how to removing the rear shift rod without dropping the transmission? Alternatively, has anyone changed the bushings without removing the shift rod? It doesn't seem possible, but I am sure someone out there has a workaround that they have come up with.

Not gonna happen. You can replace the coupler but the shuttle cock replacement is only achieved by removing the rear shift rod, to do this transmission has to be pulled.

see above - not going to happen.

You will at some point want to drop the engine and trans so you can:

replace the shuttlecocks
replace the donut in the nosecone
mill the nosecone and put in a steel plate to retain the main bearing
check the selector bracket for cracks
