What I need to know is what grit paper to use and how much I have to rough it up and what grit to do the primer sanding . I am using a single stage paint

Thanks Greg

Well alot depends on the quality of the surface. If the paint is intact and its just a re-shoot you can scuff (400-600 grit), shoot some sealer and spray away.

Could I use primer as a sealer

Shooting primer as sealer depends - check your primer and paint tech sheet.

What grit to prep sand depends - check your primer and paint tech sheets.

Rust repairs? Dent repairs? Chipped paint repairs? Bare metal? - These will all affect what type of primer(s) you will need.

The quality of the old paint is important. If it is perfect and just sand with 400 to 600 grit is spot on. I would spray a sealer coat so you have good adhesion. For the new paint.
