View original topic: jug to crankcase question

Quick question. Where specifically do I apply the RTV when installing the jugs in the crankcase? Does the RTV go into the crankcase sealing the bottom of the machined cylinder or does it stay between the crankcase and the bottom of the jug. Hope thats worded so that it makes sense Wish I had a picture Thanks all!!

Good question. No definite answer.

IMO, just put a little fillet in the corner of the cylinder's flange and stick it in there, it'll seal the flange for awhile and maybe make a little "formed in place o-ring" as they call it in the gap, or it may not, depends how much space there is for the sealer to inhabit.

Trying to seal around the entire skirt of the cylinder to the case "radialy" is just impractical, too much of a mess!

Nah. smear a thin coat all around the seating area of the case, as per VW's instructions. The little bit that gets into the spigot shouldn't significantly affect cooling.

Thanks. Makes sense and kind of what I thought, but this being my first build I'm a little spooky about it

like modock said .I make a bead about 1/16~1/8 around the cylinder in the inside seating corrner where the flat meets the cylinder .if I use shims I do 1/16" bead under and on top of the shim in the same area.no leeks no mess.no pluged oil pickupscreen.

I also put it on the cylinder face that butts up against the case. If you put it on the case, if the bottom of the cylinder touches the RTV it will carry it deeper into the case, where it can break loose and cause problems. Basically I put the RTV where the cylinder shim would be (if you used one).

A extremely thin bead about size of pencil lead (1/16 inch) on lip of cylinder... Remember you are only filling a very small gap caused by slight variation in machining.... Not a hole you would float a boat through....

From Vince1's build

That is about double the amount you need.

Looks more like about 4 times, and it is on the spigot part of the cylinder where it will be carried downs into the spigot. Definite overkill, and might be enough to cause problems. I know it's not popular on the Samba, but the factory method avoids getting any into the spigot, as you don't bring it up to the edge - unless you are really clumsy when installing the cylinders.

Way to much goop....One only needs about 1/4th that amount...

Remenber, you are only replacing what a paper gasket can do...

Lovely beads, though.

yup thats a bit much.and remember rtv skins over fast. so do one then install it and do the next. use some sort of fixture to hold the cylinder if you turn the crank so the cylinder doset get pushed up.also be sure that you are not on a stud thread or incert .and your firmly seated. the bergman 2386 I redid had about 2x that amount of silycone.what a mess.

Maybe - but the color probably clashed with his outfit...
