View original topic: What's the best "110" cam?
Matthew Mon Sep 08, 2014 1:49 pm

I think most people would agree the Engle 110 cam is the most popular aircooled VW cam in history. Looking though 70's issues of dune buggies & Hot VW's one can see that the popular combo of the day for those that couldn't afford a stroker crank went something like this:

88 X 69
Engle 110 cam
Ported Dual Port (sometimes big valve) heads
1 1/2" merged exhaust
48 IDA Webers on short manifolds.

Now for the question. If one were to want to build a mostly period correct engine but use an alternative to the Engle 110, what would you use? Many have noted that the Engle 110 is a bit noisy and there are other similar cams that are smoother and make a little more power. What other cam that was available in the 70's or early 80's is better? Scat C35? Norris 330S? Bugpack 4062-10? Something from Webcam?

Back in the day the Engle VZ-25 with stock rockers or the Engle V-26 with 1.4 rockers were popular for small street engines.

FK7 makes power to 5500 rpm, but makes more of it, granted that the combo matches. It needs 1.4s to work as the grinder intended it to. The FK7 is a lot easier on the valvetrain, and quiet too.

Any 1.4/5500 RPM cam will outperform a W110 these days. They will generally need larger valves than the 110 because of lift, but will still make as good as, or better bottom end torque.

Crower 61004. A little smoother off idle, and pulled 1000 rpm higher than an Engle 110 in a personal 1776. You can go on Crower's site and view the cam card by typing in 61004.

FK41 is great cam. I built a 1776 recently with 1.25 rockers(.490 ish lift) and the FK41. Tons of low end and will rev to 7000 if you want to.

Also the CB2241 is a great cam. Both are plenty mild, but when teamed with 1.25's pull hard.

When I build the next 1776-1835 I am going to try a FK42 to pickup up a lil more hp...

Thanks for the replies. Several have come up that I hadn't thought of. No takers on Scat, Bugpack or Norris?

Mathew on my photobucket site has examples of a 2054 w/ 2241 cam, the 1776 with c35 cam, and the black bus with a bugpack 4061 1776 engine. Some was done with my phone and the other with a high def camera with better sound quality. If you can seperate the background noise, you can judge for yourself. All cams youre asking about. I thought the c35 cam was most quiet, but again there are many variables like exhaust leaks and audio noise. Take note that I have no particular opinion on the best 110 like cam. If it fits the app on the combo, and I have it on my shelf, I use it.
On my personal engine sound wise I cant tell a diff in sound from the old fk8 and web 86c...

I was just looking at the Crower page and the descriptions seem very optimistic for the specs. 2000-7000 RPM for a dual pattern cam that is pretty close to a W110? I call B.S. It does seem like a great cam, but it's still going to make power till only about 5800.

A a Scat C35 has slightly less lift, and a Bugpack 4062-10 has slightly more lift, both within a degree of duration of an Engle 110. Bugpack no longer offers their cams, so you will need to find a NOS one, or have someone make one from a cam card. I don't have any specs for any of the Norris Cams. You can also think out of the box, and just have a cam made. People like Pat Downs from CB Performance, or Steve Long from Steve Long Racing Camshafts have decades worth of design work with VW Camshafts. Tell them what you're building, and see what they would recommend.

If you want period correct, how about a W-110 and 1.3 porsche rockers ?

modok Thu Sep 11, 2014 8:38 pm

Where the the engle 110 shines is some of the stranger combos.

Good for small cc stock heads, good for large cc with single carb, might be period correct with a bugspray on top.

Jack of all trades is a master of none. V-26 is much better vintage choice for your dual idf/ida carb'd street motor.

Thanx gkeeton for posting this link. I've been looking for this info to update my CAMS listings. Crower and Crane are two I needed.

Here's a quick list of Crower's Cams.

Here's the PDF out of their catalog.

You can type in the part number in the above cam card link to get the full card. Crower will also custom grind whatever you want.
