View original topic: AS Code Engine in a 1970 Westy

I have pulled my engine to do some maintenance and cleaning. I am confused with the engine code. The bus is a 1970 Westy with a dual port 1600. However, the engine code is an AS.

My research on Samba and other sites tells me this is not a 1970 engine case. Type2.com lists it as a super beetle original for 1973 on or sold over the counter as a replacement. Is there a way to narrow down the year this engine was produced?

The Technical Vin/chassis numbers table here shows it as a 1977

Does it have a Venturi Ring on the Fan Air intake?

No Venturi ring.

Is there any significance of it being a 1977 vs a 1970?

Not to thread jack but I am having a similar issue. My 70 Bay has a single port however the engine case has the following engine code (which was not on that list posted ^^)

U0484393

Dating an engine case will tell you virtually nothing other than the obvious. There are exceedingly few '70's era
VW's that have their original engines, and there are exceedingly few 70's era cases that are unmodified and
are matched with exactly the same components as they originally were.

That's a bonus, late case with big oiling, nice!
The only time it matters is when you are buying internal parts like cams and oil pumps, for tune up specifications it doesn't matter what the engine number or year is because you go by what distributor and carb is installed.

Thank you all.

I am going to change the oil for the (my) first time. Is the engine oil capacity different than what is listed in my 1970 Owners Manual?

Nope, still the same.
