View original topic: Setting timing on the Vanagon

I've set the timing based on previous threads here (3000 RPM 35 deg BTDC) and the eng runs fine... Slightly better MPG than I was getting before. But... I've noticed that from a stop it has a slight hesitation and doesn't just "get up and go" .... But when cruising along at speed it runs great. I advanced the timing and did some driving tests. When I advance the timing a bit, I think the van runs much better and the hesitation is gone. Is this normal?

My Syncro always ran better when a couple of degrees retarded, so each engine has its own best timing.

Same for me, it likes more than 35. I understand that 35 is a good starting point then fine tuning is required. I advanced mine past the 35 mark by tiny increments then road tested each time until it started to ping at high rpm then I backed off a tiny bit. For me this is optimum, best mpg, best power, best starting, best acceleration, best sound. Its happy there and me too.
