We have a 74 bus that came with an upright 1600 standard, there were two engine options in Oz. How do they move along with the 1600 in? As long as it will cruise at 100K's (62.137 mph to yoo yanks) will be OK for an old fart like myself.

100k is a prime cruising speed for a 1600 dual port. A well balanced 1600 will go a little quicker, but fuel economy, speed, and cooling is in a happy medium right there.

You're good as long as the transaxle ratios are built for a 1600, which yours sounds like it is. A transaxle for a '74 to other delivery markets may be better matched to the 1800 T4 motor that was an option depending on delivery locale. I know you sound confident, but many people read these threads without posting, so I want everyone to be covered.

Thanks for that fella's, the gearbox is original so I reckon it'd be the right gearing. It's a three rib.

I would not worry about the transaxle! But If it's not set up for a Type-1 Up-Right engine there will be gaps in the engine tin and too much overheating can occur. Does your Engine come out the back of the Bus like it will on the early bus? The rear apron removes completely on the early bus but the Type 4 that started in 1972 here in the US have it as part of the bus body.

Oh yea! A 74' 3 rib is strong and is a great match for a 1600. Lots of torque.

It came with all the tin for a Bay, it's a lot different (Bigger) than the tin on a Split or a pancake engine, it's properly sealed of cooling air.
