View original topic: DK transmission! found one, now time to rebuild it.

I just plucked a DK trans from a local yard today, SCORE!! Got it for a fair price, but I will need to tear into it in order to swap the bell housing when I am ready to mate it to my AAZ. This is a critical piece of the puzzle for my '82 diesel, as it will eventually allow me to cruise 70mph on the interstate! Wooohooo! My real question here is who has rebuilt one, and is there anything you would recommend doing that maybe you missed, etc?

What are my differential options? I would like to add some sort of limited slip capability. I don't recall seeing anything while browsing.

I believe 3rd and 4th gears need to be replaced.. where do I order them from? (I think I've seen Weddle mentioned on the forum before?)

Clutch upgrades? Probably necessary as I will eventually want to modify my turbo/IP to help turn a taller transmission, and taller tires.

Thanks! Ill put up some pictures of Goldie, my 82 diesel tin top.

Weddle’s prices currently look like this:

Each regear: $375
VW R&P: $595
Peloquin torque bias: $1,262
Rebuild parts for 4-speed, probably about $550

May be cheaper somewhere else.

If you're thinking of rebuilding the transaxle yourself, check out
Long Enterprises. This should provide some insight:

I bought their CD of transaxle rebuilding. In terms of DIY work, I've never delved past swapping input shafts but the CD was money well spent in terms of me realizing a bit of what's involved in rebuilding a transaxle. That said, for POV, I am not a pro wrench.

Thats a pretty steep pricetag, but I have the R&P Id need, and hopefully just need to replace 3rd and 4th.. as they don't seem to be engaging.

Ill have to save up for a peloquin, but living in Montana and loving to ski deems it necessary.

Looks like the longenterprises.com cd could be very helpful. In combination with the bentley manual I feel like its something I could tackle.

What about tool rentals ? I saw that the drive ring tool is $130 from ebay.. does anyone have a set to rent a guy?

Thanks!
