View original topic: T-4 alternator bolts too long

Just a heads up. I bought a new Bosch alternator for a '78 bus. When I went to put on the belt I could not get enough angle on the alternator to install it. After fumbling around for 15 minutes, I discovered the bolts holding on the cover plate were sticking out 1/2" beyond the nuts and one was hitting a tin. I took off the alternator and cut the bolts down. All is good now. Just letting y'all know that if you buy a new Bosch alternator, check the bolt length before you do the install. I think I cut then down 1/4" or a bit more.

The much bigger concern is the studs on the diode plates. If too long they will touch the cover, short out, and burn up both your new alternator and the wiring harness.

I read about that in a recent thread and removed the cover plate for inspection. Everything was pretty flush. I guess quality control varies from alternator to alternator.
