Not really a dumb question. 64' buses I think had the 40 HP engine . A 1500cc engine was an available option. I don't know if the birth certificate you can get from Vw will tell you. I dont know how many buses had the larger engine. If you put a single port 1600 engine in a 64' you are unlikely to raise any eyebrows from the stock enthusiasts. |

Yes, it could be a 40hp engine or a 1500.
The easiest way to tell what your Bus has is to look for the 1500cc air cleaner hanger in the engine compartment.
If you have that hanger, you have a 1500cc Bus.
It will be a metal plate attached to the top of the engine compartment and painted to match. See it here in Blue:
(Ignore the black piece there as that is for a special air cleaner) |

^this (and EV's post). 1600 SP full-flow external doghouse. Bullet proof.
And you can dress it like stock and most wouldn't know. |

Might as well go with a 1600 for more power, safer on the highway. |

Unless you are aiming for a bone stock resto, a 1600 SP with doghouse is a good reliable motor it is easy to get parts for.
FWIW, a 1500 64 bus may have the air cleaner hanger on the left side. |
