Any tips for reinstalling the throw out bearing. Spring coil faces down, yes? Retaining spring arms seem like they would need to stretch a fair bit before locating on the arm. Am I missing something?

you'll be tempted to push on the spring with a flat head screwdriver; don't do that. you'll be replacing it again in a week. it's been awhile since i did it but i was able to jam a screwdriver under the arm and lever it up towards the spring instead. much more solid approach.

Always nice to let people know whwt you are working on. VW use several different throwout bearings over the years.

I always put the spring towards the bottom, but I don't think it really matters. The bearing is supported by the guide and the spring just holds it back against the throwout arm. I just use a screw driver to push the spring into place, never had an issue with that damaging anything.
