I am replacing a cracked brake reservoir. The grommet had been completely dissolved from the brake fluid so I bout a new grommet from Bus Depot. As you can see in the photo the grommet is not going to fit into the brake fluid tube without splitting it. Has anyone had this issue? If so, what did you end up doing?

A 70 doesn't use any grommet or seal there, later buses used a 211-611-833 C which still isn't that part you got, it looks like the seal where the tube goes into the master from here.

Do you have any suggestions to keep the reservoir from leaking fluid down the outside of the brake fluid tube?

That's what it is.

Bad link.

But that hose doesn't look like it uses a seal, just a tight fit over the nipple.

Since the hose is old it may be hard and not making a tight seal. Or the repro reservoir's nipple might be too small. You might need to replace it, or possibly use a hose clamp although that might just crack it. I don't know if teflon tape would hold up to brake fluid.

I found that even with the correct seal that I had to use a heat gun to soften up the hose so that I could fit it together.

This is what my '69 needed to quit weeping between the upper reservoir and tube. It's also on the low-milage survivors I've inspected. A factory plastic hose clamp (or black zip tie) with just the slightest clamp will function best. A white zip tie will be good to. Or a green one, or a pink one, though I'm partial to correct-ish when possible.

I found all the brake grommets I needed and the reservoirs from Eric at Bug Haus. He had some genuine ones everyone else was out of. I think that weird special 1968 one was the only one he did not have last time I looked for someone.

The http://www.busdepot.com/211611833c part is the correct part. They turn to like gum over time but that helps them seal. On some years there is a special plastic VW clamp that goes around 100% without distorting the hose and it must be used.

Does anyone know where to get the special plastic VW hose clamp that secures the hose to reservoir and master cylinder? I believe it is number 9 in the diagram.

Thanks

211 611 403
211-611-403

is the part number for #9. Google and consider making some calls would be my suggestion.

Thanks for the link and part number. I appreciate the help. I was able to get the stock hose and grommets--now all I need are the clamps.

Justkampers has them new so I would assume busdepot has or could get the clamps as well.
