Tcash - gotta hand it to you. When you first started doing all these posts with photos etc I asked myself - gee how long I wonder will this last, and how thorough will these be? How accurate will they be?

Well - the work you have done - photos, quotes on subjects, putting it together in one place is really a good thing and I would like to commend you for the time you take to help others here. I seriously doubt there is another forum, of any kind, in the world that has more detail than the Bay forum.

This thread with the bumpers is excellent.

Porn. Purveyor, thereof: Volkswagen :o standing in awe.

Didn't know that baywindows had a deco strip option, didn't know about fog light punch outs for ambulances, never saw a comparing photo of 1972 bumper to early bumper, and I didn't know about the late bay bumper strip, nor about the different hardware spacing on early baywindow bumpers.

Thank you very much!

68-72 Bumper gravel guard

68-72 Front & 68-71 Rear Bumper

your first pic is for later buses, 73 up? I know I have never seen them on a 68-72. it is possible that it started on the 72

the second pic, your text is reversed for the brackets. the fronts are on the left, rears on the right.

that's all I got  keep up the good work. you are the man!
=D>

if/when you make the correction, let me know and I will delete this post so it won't clutter your thread

The gravel guard notes escaped me. My 1968 and 1970 baywindows are not so equipped, my 1973 has it, but my 1977 did not...but I cannot say the 1977 was simply missing.

X2 - I remember complaining to Everett that there was some guy posting up info that was already out there.

I had to wait and see the method to the madness 8)

Good work Mr Cash.

X3 or 4 or whatever 8)

Early bays didn't have the gravel guard, it's a 72+ thing. 72 (like many other parts) is a one year only item, later ones interchange up to 79.

This is great, thanks.

Is there any specific information for the uprights on the 68-72?

There's actually 2 styles of these, early & late (even though they were nearly all on "early" bays). I'm not sure what year between 68-72 they changed. The earlier ones are a rounded rubber insert, more like the ones found on split buses where the later ones are flat like the ones pictured here. Here's pics of the ones on my 1968 German Clipper. Even still, awesome of Tcash to put all this together. Great resource!

I don't know how many details or variations you wish to include, but the bumpers on my 1975 single cab are a bit different. They have mounting holes for fog lights, for one. I could take photos and post them here if there is interest.

Also, on my 1978 double cab, the bumper mounts in the rear have three mounting holes, to accommodate the original Euro hitch.

Please do.

Photo of rear fog light in its factory mounting hole on the rear bumper of a 1975 single cab with the Z21 package:

Photo of the rear bumper on that same 1975 single cab, showing the interesting flat spot, with holes in it, on the center underside of the bumper:

I do not believe this pickup ever had a hitch, but it could have perhaps. But, even so, did VW ever have a hitch that attached to the bumper this way?

72vwtype2 Mon Aug 24, 2015 7:48 am

Besides comparing different bumper measurements and characteristics, were the bumpers not date stamped? VW seemed to date stamp most parts. My 58 beetle bumper blade is stamped in the middle. I can't seem to find the same stamp on my bus bumpers, but then they are fairly scuffed up and rusty.

I was wondering, does the original bumper trim have imprinted vw spare part numbers and vw logo? Or are there any obvious differences between f.ex. original 70-72 trim and repro trim?

The way I understand it is that ALL deluxes were called Clippers, but the special ones are the Clipper L (German Clipper). The cool bumper trim, extra chrome strips on interior panels, jail bars, chrome luggage bar on rear seat, clock in the dash, all features of the Clipper L. There's actually two different kinds of the bumper trim. The early Clipper L's (68-69) had this style, which resembles the trim that early splitty deluxes had:

The 70/71 Clipper L's, the bumper trim is more flattened out, where the early ones are rounded. I think those repro ones are the later style, if I'm thinking of the same ones you're talking about.

Hi djdh68dlux,

yes, you're right.

at least I got and added the cool bumper trim on my bus and now it's more a twin to the sold Clipper L of Phil.
It's the newer, bigger and more flattened trim – correct for my 1971 Clipper.

Can confirm. The 1972 Sportsmobile that I just sold to Ryan in Florida has the original gravel guard.
