View original topic: burr at side gear snap ring groove
esde Sat Oct 25, 2014 11:21 am

I was pulling the axles and tubes off of my old trans to use on a different project, and came across this problem. The first side gear was tight to get out, after removing the snap ring. The second side, the snap ring came out, but the side gear will not slide out. I removed the differential carrier to have a closer look at the problem. The groove for the large snap ring, the outer corner is raised a tiny bit, as if the side gear was pounding on the snap ring.

You can see the burr in the pics, it is very slight but just enough to keep the side gear in. And sharp too :(
What could be the cause, and what should I do to prevent it again?
Thanks, SD

Normal wear. Tap the gear out from the other side and debur with emery cloth.

I have seen this on drag trannys and buggys that have gone through a lot of stress. Also sometimes the side gear is cracked, causing this bur to rise up. What were you using this tranny for?

Thanks, thats what I was hoping to hear. It's a relatively low hour trans, though it was in front of a fairly peppy engine for a while.
