And then come back at some random time? It will only happen when the van runs warmer than normal like in stop n go traffic. The other instruments work fine. Scary thing in these busses no to have a reliable temp gauge. the wire to the sensor is new. It happened before I replaced the lead.

Time to bleed the cooling system.
Air gets trapped in the rear heater loop and works it's way around the loop.
When the needle drops and than comes back, air is passing the sensor in the t state housing.

You are also complaining about no low end power.
If the temp2 sensor has air around it as well, you will have management issues and power loss.

Running a vehicle with air in the system will heat the sensors to a point that makes them unreliable.

I just bled a 90 Westy the other day for a local experiencing some of the same issues and heat that would go on and off too.
After the proper bleeding...all is well.

Bleed it for sure, I had a temp sensor go intermittent on me, replacing it fixed the gauge problem.
