Does anyone make A/C's for type 2's? I would like to have a dual cab, but living in florida, an A/C is needed during the summer...

Type in "Airconditioning" at Aircooled.Net

Friedpotatoes Sun Jan 25, 2004 6:24 pm

thats a long way for that a/c to travel and besids the cars that have a/c in back its not that cold or they have v6 or v8

Eaallred Sun Jan 25, 2004 9:06 pm

Aircooled.Net is selling the Gilmore A/C kits. They blow out about 40 degree air when going down the highway. The Ice a/c system does not work as well.

Air conditioning? Yup... its called safari windows. They didn't need A/C in FL in the 50s and 60s... why do you need it now?

SHSC Sun Jan 25, 2004 9:57 pm

Gilmore kits are built in FL. But if you need AC in your bus your probably need more of something along the lines of a mini van.

The VW just didn't have it. A/C was developed in the 30's, if I recall correct. I think it was used first on a passenger bus. Also, there's some fierce global warming going on. We need to stop the pollution and find a solution! :!:

I agree with you Ian, but by adding A/C to your vehicle you're going to be taxing the engine more and therefore using more fuel. Nothing like helping out that global warming a little huh?

I'd be interested to see the details of mounting it to an upright engine though. I've seen it done, but I've never had the chance to check one out up close. I'd like to see where all the components are placed...

when travelling at highway speeds, supposedly a car is more fuel efficient with the windows closed and the air conditioning on then with the windows open. aerodynamics or something.

Hrrmmmm... thats possible. It all depends on the car and the efficiency of the A/C system though. I don't kow if one of those old big York's would help support that statement though :) If anything the added weight would hurt you lol
Personally I'll take my safaris over the A/C. In my BMW I have a sunroof and A/C. I have a pinhole leak in a line coming off of the compressor... found it early last summer. Rather than taking it off and fixing it, I just bust open the sunroof, but I don't use that much because I'm usually too busy driving the bus! FL can be nasty humid tho...

Eaallred Mon Jan 26, 2004 7:27 am

The modern A/C compressors like what Gilmore uses, only draw a few HP, not like the inefficient compressors of the 70's. Things have changed a LOT since A/C gave VW's a bad name 30 years ago.

OK, this is a Split Bus forum.
Enought with the Global Warming stuff.
Take that to the Rants!

Oh, and as to the A/C stuff, the compressed freon lines can run all the way up to the front with very little efficiency loss. It is the pressure/liquid state of the freon which causes the heat transfer, not the temperature of the fluid or gas in the lines, so whether it travels 4 feet or 12 feet, not much efficiency difference.

Have you been driving in florida during July / August with the humidity..... It is unbelievably miserable... and with a daily driver double cab, with kids, you need to make it more comfortable...

Yes, but not with kids. Flipseat is correct, no one needed it before. I would suggest dress accordingly and make the trips short. Bring some waters or whatever.

I always wondered how cold a panel bus would be inside if it was loaded with blocks of ice, and how long the ice would take to melt.

If I lived in Florida, I'd probably go for it.
Just make sure you use a modern scroll compressor system.
You need to make sure your engine is in good shape, and I would install both an oil temp. and head temp gauge.

Good Luck!

Carrier developed air-conditioning in the 1920's.

Ian, if you believe all this global warming BS, then park your pollution spewing Bus and ride a bicycle. In the 1970's we were supposedly going to encounter a new Ice Age. In the late-80's it suddenly became global warming. Most people acclimate themselves to the A/C and *think* it's hotter than it used to be many years ago. I never had my house A/C on last summer and I live in Oklahoma. It was 90's outside and I didn't care. Drink fluids and keep cool.

Global warming is

my pappy always told me my bus had a 255 airconditioner in it..... 2 windows open at 55, argh, argh, but of course if you have a 25hp barndoor that may be a 250?!

John Schultheis Mon Jan 26, 2004 8:44 pm

Anybody actually installed and or running one of these? Need info, summer starts next month here in FL, today was pretty warm, actually. People complain that there ain't no busses in FL, here's why!

John

I think you got that wrong... people are happy there aren't more buses in FL. Because people do crap like this to VWs in FL! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2454591861&category=6019
