Hello - We own a 71 square-back and I have a chance to pick a 72 square-back 411. Would the disk brakes work from the 411 on e 311? These cars has similar looks but yet still different parts. The engine in the 411 is gone and a lot of other interior parts are gone, and thats what made me think of brakes and a few other parts. I thought I would ask the brains on thesamba to see what they thought.

Thanks in advance

Somewhere in '71/'72, the Type 3 brakes changed to the larger Type 4/914 brakes. The caliper, spindle, disc, splash guard all changed. I'm not sure but I think you can swap this over to your earlier beam from a later Type 3. But from a Type 4? I think just the discs and calipers.

Other experts here can tell you when the changeover occurred, and there are a couple of threads you might find with search.

It was 72 when the change happened for the front discs.
You'll need the later 72-73 spindles from a type 3 to use them on your beam/car.

Keep in mind that the rear drums and backing plate assemblies ARE a direct interchange (they have 311 part numbers on them).

Not much else directly interchanges between the 2 models.

Are the late T3 spindles interchangeable with T4 spindles? I had assumed they were different given the different suspension setup. I've never taken a T4 apart to know. So I assumed just calipers, rotors, pads can migrate Types.

thank you for the response.

The type 4 have mcpearson front supsetion so the spindels a totaly diffrent
but the spindel tap and brake set up is the same

Not quite. It is year specific....not JUST type 3 to type 4 brakes are the same.

There are no VW 412 front discs that will fit a type 3.

It is only the VW 411 disc and caliper...from 1968 to August of 1971.... which means that 1968 through 1971 model years only...rotor and caliper....will fit the LATE model type 3 through 1973.

After August of 1971 the VW 411 was renamed the 412 and it had a thicker rotor with a stiffer hub and a thicker pad and a resulting thicker caliper than the 411 rotor and pad set up.

You´re one year wrong. 411 was renamed 412 in August of 1972

Yep...you are right I was answering quickly off the brake change dates. You would think I would remember since I have owned at least one of every year since 71....and my first car was a 1972 411
.....but the dates for the rotor and brake changes are correct. Ray
