Hey ive pretty much ditched the idea of putting in an ecotec in my bug and now i want to go with a bigger VW engine. Right now i have a 1600SP but i was thinking about getting a 2180 buying the longblock and do the rest myself. A couple guys around here say that getting a stroker like that wont be very good because the thinness of the cylinder wall. They say to get a 1835 and ill be pretty good but i think i want to go bigger. Its mostly desert driving and some on road but we have same big hills (sand dam) at superstition desert and that 1600 just isnt strong enough since there is some soft sand. This engine will be in a baja bug BTW. So what fo you guys think. Wouldnt it be ok to get a stroker?

a 2180 can be worse than a 1600. a 1600 can be worse than a 2180.

Cheap parts are cheap and will break, but a well built motor with good parts will last longer than a stock 1600 in a stock car. so theres that

2180 and 1835 have the same cylinders go stroker

Only issue with a stroker is if an idiot (Jim Kelly) builds it..........

Do a thick wall 2180, uses 92mm cylinders but has a thicker casting. Have the case cut for 94mm cylinders and you are in business.

Nothing wrong with 94mm cylinders. Almost as thick as stock 85.5's. Not quite as much room around the barrel itself for airflow though. Thick wall 92's or thick wall 88's are good to go as well. 90.5's are fine too.

Stay away from slip in 87's and thin wall 92's.

a 1915 built right will easily double the power that a stock 1600 has. Thats what I built last summer.

Go Big or Go Home!
2276 is my choice due to the crank length equaling the offset in the stroker pistons.
I've been building 1914s and 2276s for years without any problems.
With the right cam and rocker choice they are just as reliable as your 1600 SP.

My Rail engine is a 2276 SP 40x35.5 heads!
