I got a 71 deluxe bus a few months ago for my first car and I'm planning on rebuilding the motor soon, I'm on a high school budget so I was thinking on rebuilding the dual port heads and sticking with the stock crank, engle w100 cam, 34pic3, 034 svda. I'm not sure what exhaust I'm going to use yet but so far this is what I've got planned. Does anyone know how well this combo should work?

It'll feel the same. There are better cams to make more torque with an otherwise stock/stock-ish setup. You'll move the powerband up from 4100 RPM to 5000 RPM, but your carb won't support gains made at that RPM, so it'll become sort of a bastard combo.

If I wanted a little more oomph by making only one or two mods, I'd leave the cam alone, buy 88mm slip-in/90.5 bore head pistons and cylinders for $150, get the heads bored for 90.5 for $20-$50. I've driven a Bug with a 1776 and 34/PICT 3 and it had significantly more pulling power over stock. I've also built a 1641 for a 69 Camper that had a noticeable improvement over stock. I wouldn't recommend the 1641, but it was what the owner wanted.

I would go for the 1776 but I'm trying to stay smaller and maybe save some gas money down the road. I'm not really looking to hot rod around or anything fancy like that.

88 slip-ins will make your engine a 1679cc. I was just mentioning that a stock carbed bigger cc engine would still make good power. I figured you wanted to use the 100 cam and better exhaust to make more power. A 95cc increase is hardly "hot rodding". It will make your Bus easier to drive, AND the 88s are thicker than stock 85.5s in the critical areas, which makes it a stronger cylinder that will resist warpage more than stock.

So stock cam with 88mm slip ins would give me a decent power increase without having to drill out my case or anything like that?

The heads need to be opened to take them, but the increase in capacity will give you a lift in compression that will work better with your cam.

I was at this point at 1st purchase of my '70 deluxe. I wanted within reason, max reliability so bottom was new stock,87',swap to dp's & dh cooling, vw's 09&a simple header. Stock carb ok up about 50mph , no hills, soon i switched to a 'forum forbidden ??made to fit' 2bbl carb & never looked back, xtra carb /gss handled top end. I usually had mdl seat out but tool box, when cruising my usual 55 i still got 23-25 mpg, eng went appx 60tho when sold , still seemed ok, my 2cts. I did convert back to stock carb sys & kept my 'forbidden carb' 4 later use.

Since you mention you are gonna rebuild heads, port them polish them. If you go with the 88's you will gain a umph to push the bus. Full flow the case and add that much needed oil filter. You will be glad did.
