View original topic: Ignition keys for a '66 Type 3
lakedawgs Tue Jan 27, 2015 11:38 am

I have a '66 Squareback and want to get an ignition key copied.
My local lock shop has a lot of VW keys but is having trouble matching it up.

They asked me to see if anyone has a like key that they can give me the # off of. The number on my old copied key is worn off.
Also, does anyone know if '66 Squareback keys match up to any other keys?
Thanks

Since you have a 66, more than likely you have a 2 key car. You can take the passenger door lock out (less used), and get the key code (number) off it, and have new door lock keys made for it. For the ignition key, you'll have to remove the igintion switch to get the code off of it.
Keep in mind that I think 67 was the first year that VW went to 1 key for the entire car, but even so, the early ignition switches were fragile and often replaced.

It is a 2 key car, do not have any door keys.
Car is in the garage and will be for a year or more likely.
Just wanting an extra ignition key for now.

I know I can find them online, and will go that route if needed.
If I can get the blank # off a current key, I should be good at my local place.

your local place will not have them. Thats why I suggested those at a great price. I used to cut keys, this is a one year only key. I used to be able to find things that can be made to work by eye, but I don't have any of that old stuff any more. A good locksmith can make something work, the younger guys only want ilco or jma or curtis numbers

I think the Curtis code is V24. I don't think they have been made for a very very long time

This place has been in business for almost 60 years, he has a bunch of VW blanks, he is just trying, by number, to make sure he has the right one. A bit of research tells me the Taylor # is V69N. So with that and the Curtis number, I should be good. If not I will go the online route.
Thanks

I agree buy local when you can-

I think V69n is wrong profile

http://www.ebay.com/itm/THREE-CURTIS-key-blanks-V2...mp;vxp=mtr

here you go lot of 3 for <10 bucks

my 64 takes this same key so not technically a one year only (just in the US)

agreed, I buy local when I can, it's just really tough nowadays. V69N isnt correct. and good point, one year only USA, many years actuality, 64-66? I think 67 was different

Pretty sure it is this one, V-13

The curtis V-13 is the same as taylor V69N. Most of my '66 type 3's I have use the "H" code ignition key curtis V-13 or taylor V69N. The "DV" code blank is a V-24 curtis or taylor V77V. Not common but I have a '66 column that uses a "FM" key taylor cross reference V70E.

Cool, I thought the Taylor V69N was the same as the Curtis V-13, but was not sure, thanks!
