I just returned from a short visit to Mexico and it got me wondering how much does it cost to import a Volkswagen to California from Mexico.
Also what are the years and requirements and the likelihood of doing this. Volkswagens are everywhere in Mexico and are very cheap unlike here in California. This includes buses as well so I was just curious if anyone does this and how expensive it is
I know it would need to be 25 years or older due to safety standard issues but that still allows up to a 1990 bug.
I'm guessing the import would be a small fortune
Here's a nice 1996 I looked at there . Asking just under 2k

And a unk year bug and water cooled bus

The short answer is you can't. They don't meet US crash safety or emissions requirements. |

Yes, on the federal level you can import one 25 years and older. However, you live in California and anything '76 and up would have to be smogged. That sin't going to be so easy! |
