Thanks.

neither, a long black wire comes from the voltage regulator pass the gas tank along the driverside wall right behind the wall panel at about beltline hieght..
What Manny said.
Though when I bought a 65 westy there was a wire from the front that was all mangled from being caught in the fan. It wasn't connected to anywhere. I had to connect it to hot (through an in-line fuse) to get the camping lights working.

so what do you think happened there? they took what was left of wire from the back and re routed it from the front?

What happened was a PO disconnected it from the VR, at the end by the right taillight in the diagram below. The wire was in place for the side lights, and stock, but where it is supposed to be connected to hot in the engine compartmnet it was loose. The fan ate it.
I had to do some wiring repair to get camping lights.

The moral is don't leave that wire loose when driving.

Dunno. I never compared them from bus to bus.

Run the wire in front of the rear gas tank brackets and you'll never worry about that issue again.

Example pic from the gallery

I thought kits after #1050 were supposed to have the rectangular lights :?

I have fabrik#967 and have the rectangular lights.

Good idea. Why didn't you tell that to the PO of the green/white 65 SO-42 I used to own?
You could have told him to leave it green/white and not paint it metallic blue.
And you might as well have convinced him not to paint the dash, or the whole cab, in faux wood tone brown while you were at it.

;)

What can you tell a guy with a faux wood dash that he doesn't already know?

Thanks. That's what I needed to know. Time to start looking for original switches.

you can get these switches anywhere.. i had to replace the ones in my so23 and i got some from a diy /hardware store for £2....

You can get them anywhere if you are in Europe.
They are metric size and are not available here in the states

No white screw though, right?

Major Woody Thu Mar 18, 2010 3:08 pm

White screw?

If you mean the white plastic nut that holds the switch on, yes the ones I bought had white nuts but the shape of the nut is a little different than OG. It would not fool anyone who knew what they were looking at. Mine came from Oz and look similar to this but the nut is not smooth--it has "ribs" like the original one has, except the ribs are very small.

Are these them? I ran across them in the classifieds.. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=935992

Major Woody Sun Mar 21, 2010 8:48 pm

Those are them, except the price should be $2 ea. Those are not original switches. Someone is up to no good! :x

67 Florida Deluxe Sun Mar 21, 2010 8:57 pm

I snapped a couple of shots of the switch in my '59 for comparison. I believe it's original (the switch on the other lamp is the generic toggle switch replacement).

The switch housing appears to be bakelite (reddish brown) with two markings. One is a circle with 2 over 250 (written like a fraction), the other marking is an inverted triangle with "W" over an "N"

The nut on mine is metal and was apparently painted white

hi.. i went to the hardware store that i purchased my switches from and they are indeed the same as these:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=2329

i then purchased a reducer kit for the same price, as the kit had a nut in it.

these switches fit the clam shells fine, but the nut that is in the kit is not the same as an og westy..... sorry but it was 3 years ago that i did this .

so if you have the switches available over there I would buy them and use the og nuts on them... or you can order direct from the link above....

i will gladly get these for people if they need them.... i am not after making dollar... just want to help out...

In regards to the clamshell or rectangular lights question, has anyone ever nailed down what month/year the Westfalia fabrik #1050 camper interior was installed?

Bill

The problem really is that the nuts go missing. I guess they crumble and break. It isn't too hard to find the used switches.
I didn't have nuts in the 65 westy I had. And they didn't seem to take the nuts I tried. To tell the trutch I did not hunt too hard. I just held the switch from the both sides when I turned the lights on/ off. I'd have happily used those incorrect nuts even though they are the wrong shape. Or swapped out the switches if they cost $10 the pair. For $50, no. I don't have an SO-42 any more, so it's a moot point for me.
