My '65 has the og. coat of paint, and a thin spraybomb on top. should I have the body shop strip it down to bare metal, or just sand and primer over it?
thanks

If I were the shop I wouldnt warranty my paint with the shaky can paint under it. I would at least have them try to sand the shaky can paint off then prime it. If they will strip it ot bead blast it for a reasonable price that is always the best bet.

Its like building a house on sand, what happens when it rains real heavy? I would strip it down, that way you will have a good foundation to work with, providing all the work is done correctly the paint will last for years to come.

Looks like EZ-boyz works or has worked in a paint shop we use the "build on sand" saying alot, but he is absolutely right you can put a 10,000 dollar paint job on a car but your work is only as good as the work thats under it.

The PO of my 67 did a spray bomb paint job. I found that it gums up your sandpaper really bad. In removing it I found the easiest method is to get a bucket of lacquer thinner and some scotchbrite. You can take that spraybomb stuff off the entire car in less than a couple of hours this way. Easy.

Dump your bucket and grab a fresh piece of scotchbrite a couple of times in the process and then when you think you have it done grab another fresh bucket and do it again. This process will get you down to the original paint and/or body work which you can then scuff, clean, and paint with a good chance of adhesion.

If its a reputable body shop they won't let you pay them to put paint on something that won't work. IF they're reputable, that is. A good shop doesn't want a flaking, ripply paint job driving around the area with their title in the credits so they will advise you about what needs to be done to make their paint job right.

Just a thought........maybe that would be a good way to pre-screen paint shops. IE take them a spraybombed vehicle and tell them you want to have it painted without any prep. If they raise a fuss and refuse to do it, you can hire them! LOL
