View original topic: Fuel gauge/sender problem?

I took my car to an expert gauge fixer, he told me the fuel gauge on my 73 squareback is brand new. I changed the sender twice and it still is not reading well. When I place the wire on the edge of the fuel tank, the fuel gauge reads full so what the heck is wrong with it?!

Might be the wrong sender. Bug and Type 3 look similar but are different heights, I believe.

Grounding the sender wire should make the gauge read full, as yours does, so I'm doubting it's a gauge problem.

You also need a ground wire from one of the screws that hold the sender in place to the body of the car. Without it, the tank may not properly be grounding to the car so the sender can't get a complete ground either. This results in the gauge being "off".
