We are making a trip in May (17th-27th) out to the Bar Harbor area. We will be coming from Toronto, On...So some cities/states we will hit:
-New York (Northern End- Albany, Syracuse etc.)
-Connecticut (Springfield, Manchester..etc.)
-Massachusetts (Boston,Worcester..etc.)
-New Hampshire (Manchester, Portsmouth)
-Maine (Portland, Bangor, Bar Harbor)
-Vermont (Near the white mountains etc.)
Probably close to 35 hrs of driving...:) Obviously a lot of stops with friends, some touristy stuff...but I spent my collegiate years in Maine and am fairly versed in the EASTERN USA...however new to the wife.
Is there anything noteworthy VW related to be stopping at? We are taking the TDI Wagon, so picking up some parts is not out of the question. :)

I'm in Natick, Ma about 18 miles west of Boston, not far from I-90. I've got various parts, available, depending on what you want. Can also point you to local vw events, on the weekends, that may be happening when you are here.
