Take it back to the mechanic and have him fix it right. |

OK let's think about this:
Car was running great.
Car goes to mechanic for a "tune-up."
Car now runs like crap.
Mechanic thinks the distributor magically failed? What diagnosis did he do in order to come to the conclusion that the distributor is at fault? What specifically about the distributor is at fault? If he can't tell you, that means he's guessing with your money.
In reality, he screwed something up when doing his tune-up. Find a better mechanic.
What *exactly* did he do when he did this tune-up? |

If I may make an observation and some suggestions:
I'm a cheap bastard. I refuse to pay some clown fifty bucks an hour to figure out how my car works. Just because the shop has a VW logo on the sign is not any guarantee that they know what makes an air-cooled work.
Three things I suggest:
1) Search TheSamba for instructions to make your ride run right. It's not that complicated.
2) Pick up an actual shop manual for your model - I prefer the John Muir Idiot manual. It has served me well for forty years.
3) Get the three basic tools you need to do so: A 12 volt tracing tool (looks like a glorified screwdriver), a set of feeler gauges, and a set of metric box end wrenches. Total cost will probably be less than the hourly rate that the shop is charging you for the first hour.
I am a California native and remember when it seemed there was a guy on every other corner who worked on the air-cooled VWs. I suspect that isn't the case anymore.
Good Luck. |

Take it to Buggy House in Hayward instead next time if you need a shop....James and Robert will take care of you there and your car won't come back running like shit. |

If you start playing around with that mentality, you're gonna grenade that engine quick.
Get the Bentley manual, tune it up to VW specs. |
