View original topic: Quick Exhaust Question

Ok I just ordered my exhaust extractor system ( I think thats what it is called) from BusDepot. First time to order from them. The guy on the phone seemed nice. They dont carry the nuts and bolts to connect it to the exchanger/header. I think I read on the forum one day that they were supposed to be copper? Is this true? Anyway where do I get them? What size are they? And should I paint the new muffler and tail pipe? If so with what? Any and all help would be great.

Thanks for your help,
Chris

If you call Bus Depot's 800 number you may only get a phone person who doesn't know bus from bug. Call the VWVW number when you know you'll have questions.

They do have the nuts but they probably don't sell a kit. They are cheaper elsewhere I'm sure. Lowe's has grade 2 stainless hardware.

On the bolt up to the heat exchangers you don't need copper (save those for the header pipe studs). Just get stainless steel M8 or 5/16" bolts/nuts. I pulled my muffler off after 2 years yesterday and it was a cinch because I went stainless. Use can use some anti-seize in addition if you want but so far I've found it unnecessary.

You'll need two sizes of bolts because some of the flanges on the drivers side are very close to the heatexchanger proper. Don't puncture it by accidnet.

I don't know how well that particular unit is painted but since it's "the best of the worst" I would just bolt it up and find out. You'll probably have to repaint it sometime in the future so why no save yourself one paint session now.

I'll second going down the stainless bolt route, especially if like round here you get salt thrown down on the roads.

I had a 4-1 with a quiet pack on about a month ago and the back box has some surface rust on it as does he header but the bolts look absolutely brand new.

What system have you ordered ?

i ordered the extractor ( i think ) system from bus depot. 99.00. What is the difference between this and a muffler?

The muffler is just the box that reduces the noise level. The exhaust includes the tail pipe and and pipes to connect to the headers.
