So last week I was having clutch problems and posted on here and then they seemed to go away! However, today they are back. the trouble starts about an hour into driving around town. After 1st gear, the stick simply will not go into 2nd. There is no grinding or anything foul sounding or feeling .....just the stick won't go into 2nd. Sometimes, if I wait a few seconds and let it go back to normal idle it might slip in but maybe not. Then.....If I let it sit for a few hours and then take off in it....the stick has no trouble going into 2nd.......? Any ideas?
The wingnut on the cable adjustment spot is super old and I can't find a way to twist it yet....
any ideas????
thanks a bunch

There is a special key made for that but I just use pliers. Whatever tool is used you have to make sure you don't twist the cable. That's why it has s slot in the end for a screwdriver (which is a really awkward place btw). Use another pair of pliers to grab the grab below the threads. |

im pretty sure that the clutch cable is your problem. justy to make sure, get under the bus and check out your gear shifter linkage. i had a similar problem recently and it ended up being the cable needed adjusting.
i guess it doesnt engage the throwout bearing correctly???? |

This could be your classic stop plate adjustment problem. But first, let's do a horrible clutch test. When it balks going into second, run the car to a stop. Shut off engine. Shift into second. Does it go in? No? Stop plate adjustment. Yes? Start engine, in neutral, foot off the clutch. Dip clutch and try first right away. In? Put into neutral, foot off clutch. Dip clutch and try second right away, In? It's your stop plate adjustment.
If both first and second balked from your neutral, have at that clutch adjustment, you want about 3/4 to 1" play at the pedal.

Alright, that sounds like the sort of test I can do! Can the clutch cable adjustment be the remedy when it goes into 2nd easily while cold and then after an hour have problems? Is it a heat thing??? I'm not a genius gang. First I gotta get this oil leak fixed though. Its starting to smoke from the oil burning! So this will have to come next. Thanks so much for all the help!!!
Its amazing that this can be done over the internet!!

| hey trav, lets hook up and see what this clutch stuff is all about. I'm not really experienced in trannys at this point ( I've got my "new' one sitting here waiting for the $$ to start my rebuild) but I figure, what the heck, why not get a second opinion, right? I'll email you. |
