hello,
while removing my alternator i ripped the rubber boot that connects the alternator back cover to the engine block. first of all what is the purpose of this and does it need to be replaced. secondly, will i be able to order one from vwcalimports? thanks for any feedback.

| As far as I know no one is reproducing these parts yet. It is the cooling boot for your alternator. It takes air from the fan shroud, without it you run the risk of burning up your alternator. I dont know the part# off hand but Im sure Ratwell will have it. |

That boot is available and it is critical to your alternator's health. I think I got mine for $27.95 from Wolfsburg West, get a couple of dipstick boots too, might as well replace yours while you are in the vicinity, save the spare for your glovebox emergency stash. Remove the fan to install your new alternator boot, there is a hidden wire retainer that folds up in the grommet that attaches the boot to the fan housing.

WW doesn't list it now...
From bus-boys... http://www.bus-boys.com/charging79.html
Is Item H the one you're talking about?
H. 021-903-655B Elbow Boot, AL75X, 1972 to 1974 NLA
H. 021-903-655D Elbow Boot, AL75X, 1975 to 1979 NLA
H. 022-903-655 Elbow Boot, AL108X, 1975 to 1979 NLA
The -655 & -655b are still available here - about $30 each. Evidently also used on Porsche 914. Try your local Porsche dealer too.

Did someone say ratwell and part number in the same sentence!
There are 3 boots actually:
- 72-74 is 021 903 655B
- 75-79 is 021 903 655D.
- If you have a 70A alternator you need 022 903 655.
I think they have been NLA for sometime. I may have a dealer source for one 655D but it's going to be expensive. |
