look through hot vws and vw trends and see what shows they cover in your area. then start showing your car at those shows and hope one of the mag guys likes your car and wants to shoot it. |

| Thats an awesome car - think I saw it in some show pics some years ago in a mag? What size tires are you running on the front and rear?? Its damn hard to get good profile tires for 16's in that width. |

This thread is four years old and the car's owner hasn't logged on in almost three months, so I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for a reply.
Photo 50 in his album says the fronts are 135/65/16 on the slotted wheels. On the Sprint Stars, looks like 135/15's and maybe 205/65/15. |

I talk to Jim on Yahoo messanger all the time. I actually sent him the tires for the front back in the day which were spare tires off of a Chevy Camero I believe got them from the local junkyard.
you can get a hold of him at Vdubjim@yahoo.com |

you can get a hold of him at Vdubjim@yahoo.com Thats what the OCT '03 Ultra VW says too :D 165/75X16 front 2001 C.C. space saver tire. Rear 5.50X16 Crossplies. I also thought it was FUN that VW magazines were doing articles on something so "beat up " hehe |

Thanks for the reply HerrKafer - I should have looked more closely at the pics  Thas an unusual size I would have thought - 135/65/16. Good tire size was the one thing preventing me from fitting original wheels to my Pre-A 356 |

Funny this thread popped up again!
I am the one that sold the split to Jim when he worked for the USAF in Germany. We have had contact since then, I think it is about 5 years now. |

Most of all this car is proof of how wide the Atlantic Ocean is...
Ever since 1997/98 loads of europeans have been confessing to the "patina & stamina"-God of preserving rather than over-restoring ... and often in combination with mild lowering and some period accessories. Numerous patina-Splits have been around on the European scene for over 10 years now.... Then one visiting American 5-7 years later...catches the idea...makes his copy...and wham! - all of a sudden its a new thing, an exiting thing and a published thing. "Trendsetter" on one side of the ocean "CopyCat" on the other.. Interesting. |

Good point.
Americans have for years faithfully restoring cars to original specs, many not wanting to drive cars that are rusty, dented and potentially unsafe. At the better shows in the US, there is usually a decent row of shiny, freshly painted splits in the early class. Maybe soon, a European will come to the US, take a car completely down to bare metal, and then build it up again with all the correct parts.. and wham! Set a new trend in Europe for nit picky, matching-Kamax-fender-bolts restorations....
Oh, and don't miss the --> |

By all means - I get the point. Good point.
But - rest assured: There is a huge amount of MORE difference between "preservation" vs "hoodride"....as compared to the difference between "preservation" and "restoration". That borderline is also very clear in Europe...and a reason why shows like for example HO09 encourages "originality", yet prohibits "rat look". Very very very different aspects, so let us not even discuss unsafe, unpreserved ratlookhoodriders.. evenly unwlecome on both sides of the Atlantic. |
