| i have a 69 bus and it is completely gutted. I need to put in an engine and tranny. I can get a running engine and tranny out of a 914. (I'm not sure of the year). Is this a wise descion, or is there a better more economical route? |

It would be a difficult job with major engineering hurdles particularly around the shifter linkage and your 5 speed reverse, 1 speed forward.

| Would you have to mess with it though if there is no tranny in the Bus right now? |

Forget the 914 deal... unless you get it cheap and sell the stuff to fund the parts you really need to fix the bus.
the engine/ tranny in a 914 is MID ENGINE... hench the refference to the 5 forwrd one reverse in amskeptics post..
while some say anything is possible.... in most cases it's not practical , and so find a donor bus and get the parts that bolt in to make it run.
You just might finish the project that way! :D |

| Thank you. I understand now. Yeah i'm scrapping the 914. All I could have gotten was the engine and tranny. But for $200.00 (not bad). Actually a donor bus won't be a bad idea. That's what mine became thus it is a shell on whells. Not bad for $15.00. Any advice. I could use a lot of it. I have three VW projects and zero time. Just want to get started on one of them. :D |

Wait a second, while I would agree that the 5-speed isn't suitable for a heavy bus when it was geared for the lightweight 914, what's wrong with the engine? Mid engine only means it's been turned around and it in front of the rear wheels. It's still a Type 4. The transmission has a goofy shift linkage (two kinds on the 914) which is a problem and of course it spins the wrong way so the ring would have to be flipped but the real difficulty is the 69 body and the mounting of the transmission and engine.
At those prices I'd simply save them for a later model bus unless I needed the money badly. |

| I don't have the money to buy the engine and Tranny anyways.I don't want to buy them for another bus i'm already in the middle of three different VW projects. :D :D 8) :P |

| Or like I said... IF you spend the 200 you could get more in return selling the 914 trans alone!... but, press on in the direction your projects call you... it is all any of us can do. |

| Excellent, point taken. I'll think about it. Thank you for your incite. i have a question. I have been away from the Samba for a long time and to most of you i'm a nebie to the Samba but i'm not to VDubs. but what in the world is JHC? I keep reading about people being a part of it and I just want to know. I'm sure I'm about to get a verbal a$$ whooping but i'm OK with it. |
