View original topic: Engine Seal Foam??

I went to my local VW shop today and bought this foam/rubber seal for the engine compartment. One side seem tougher than the other. It is in the shape of a capitol I as a cross section, or a H depending on which way you are looking at it. I have never noticed this stuff in the engine compartment although I havent looked. He said it may help with the exhaust smell I am getting inside. Does this stuff work? Is it difficult to put in? Any suggestions or tips? It seems pretty long do I leave it in one piece? If necessary can I cut it? Any help would be great. It was only 15 bucks so I figured what the heck.

Thanks for all the help,
Chris

The "sealed" side goes down. Lay it out starting the edge at the center right above the crankcase seam just under the fuel tank. Go from left to right, passing under the reverse wiring loom and under all that wiring crap at the voltage regulator corner. Lay it out as best you can along the edge between the engine and the compartment seam, "tacking" it by stuffing the sealed side down under the lip at each rear corner for a couple of inches. Bring the other end up to the center right above the crankcase seam just under the fuel tank and butt it against the beginning piece. Now go to the exact center just under the engine hatch striker. From there, work your way equally out left and right folding the bottom part of the H through the crack. It is forgiving foam, do not stretch it too much or you will have major overlap at the center above the crankcase seam just under the fuel tank. Keep it unstressed, and try to get it all equally bunched up around the circumference. If you have overlap, slide it back and let it bunch up a little at sharp corners.

Your engine will thank you. That is THE most important seal in your engine compartment. Think of it this way, without it, you are sucking hot air from the underside of the engine back up into the engine compartment and hence, using preheated air to "cool" your engine. Not to mention exhaust fumes. YOur engine will run MUCH cooler with it in place, and as we all know, a cooler engine is a happy engine.

It also keeps the weather out. Just look at the risers from the heater boxes to the hoses that run to the booster fan. Rusty below the seal, painted above.
