ok, i'm goin to cut my springs will i need an alignment? **please no one rant about cutting springs**

Yes, you must get an alignment on absolutely every VW when you change the ride height.
When you cut the springs, don't get greedy. A little works, a lot does not.

A friend of mine cut the coils on his 73 super. He told me he cut 3 coils off the more closed up end. then he took the last coil and heated it every quarter turn and squared the end up to sit in the perch correctly. His car only weighs about 1700lbs so if yours is heavier I wouldn't recommend taking that many coils out.

siffer?

When you cut too many turns the ride gets really stiff. You will hate it.

I cut the springs on my car by only 1 turn. This brought the nose down to where it was level with the rear. That's all I wanted, to get rid of the stock nose-high attitude all Supers have. I'd say it was 2". With this much, the ride was still super smooth, way better ride than any standard Beetle I've ridden in.

well, i've heard 1.5 off of them, and stiff doesn't bother me, i'd road in an mk2 GTI thats got autoX suspension on it and it road really really rough, and it didn't bother me then

Do NOT heat your springs up or cut them w/a torch! This makes them trash!!!This will cause your springs to be VERY weak & not worth much.
1 coil shouldn't be too bad if you must cut them but heed my advice on
the above.

Ihate it when I see people wanting to cut or heat springs to lower their ride. But I also know what it's like to be strapped for cash, but still want to LOOK good. So since you are going more for looks than ride quality, here is my suggestion. Go to your local AuroZone (Jesse James does LOL) and get a couple sets of those spring compressors that lower you ride. That way you don't screw-up your springs. Because if you cut too much you'll be buying new springs in the end, and that won't save you anything.

Good luck........ Hope you have a good dental plan j/k

I've thought about it and i'm just goin to wait and get some springs..

Ok here's the deal, I was once strapped for cash and living off top ramen too, so I did what was suggested earlier, go to autozone or pepboys's or any auto supply store for that matter and buy a set of spring compresring clamps. A word of advise, if you want to slam the front even lower go to your local hareware store and get longer bolts so that you can compress the springs even further. Just make sure the hardware is the best quality, after all your messing with your cars suspension, and that could be tragic if you skimp. Best of luck and just so you known my car handled better and looked better. I know that some will say that this practice is dangerous and I might be but it worked for me. LAST thing save, save, save and do it the right way, you"ll thank yourself.
GOOD LUCk and let us know how it goes.
