You do not want to buy a used anything in there. You already have a "used one".
This will give you an idea.

You really should do it yourself. It would help if you had a buddy or another VW guy (perhaps from the local VW club) to help guide you. It will only take a weekend and you will have a new found appreciation for the VW as a logically assembled and disassembled beast.
Do a search here on the thought of "....while I have the engine out what else should I do..." and do those things also.
Frequently the learning curve is more of a straight line. |

| a bentley will be a good guidance in doing the clutch yourself. I also have a 72 and am completing the same project right now. I have really enjoyed the project but it is a good idea to have another car to run to the parts store as needed throughout the project. This board is also a great resource for any of those "emergencies" that you run into along the way. Check cip1 for clutch prices as well. When I did mine, I also did new fuel lines, pilot bearing, throwout-bearing, and seals. That pilot bearing is a little tricky but a good slide hammer did the trick. My advice is to label everything really well, take pics if you are nervous, And unbolt the tranny at the top (2bolts) to lower it, while you pull the engine. It makes the project really run smooth.
