View original topic: Windshield Wiper Speed

I've had my '74 Super for 16 years and the wiper speed is painfully slow. They start off very slow and gradually speed up to a good slow rate, but the fast speed is about as fast as a modern vehicles slow speed. It's been in storage for the past 6 years and I'm now in process of building it back into my daily driver. Any suggestions on what to do to improve this? As far as I remember it has always been slow.

if the beetles are like other old cars, they use a vacuum motor for the wipers (i don't know). there could be a vacuum leak or the motor might be bad.

Yours has an electric wiper motor. Mine is real slow too. I suspect the mechanism needs lubrication. If that doesn't help then the motor might just be too old and may need rebuilding or replacement.

My '79 has a two speed motor. Slow and slower. When you find out how to fix it, post it here.

I suspect the SWF motors are geared for torque to move that heavy German snow off the windshield, not for speed.

I had similar problems with my SB a few years back (actually they just quit in the middle of a snow storm!) I pulled the whole wiper assmebly out, which isn't to hard, and greased every moving part. For the motor I pulled it off and took a junk motor and replaced the contacts on the stator. I put it all back together and it worked great! I would recommend doing this before you burn up your motor, they aren't cheap.

Any idea on where to get new contacts for the stator?

I'm not sure if you can get individual wiper motor parts, you might call around some of the advertisers on the samba or in Hot VW's or VW Trends most of them only sell the whole motor assmeblies though. I had access to a couple of junk motors so I salvaged the good parts to make one decent motor. If you have a decent VW junk yard near you this could be an option. The motors are pretty simple, not hard to figure out, and easy to fix.

I have scads of wiper motors for various models/ years... and whole assemblies..
several for the 73 and later super PM me if you need or want one.

most of the time it is the shafts that need lube or get siezed up...

removing the assembly and working on the posts is not that tough. and if you don't you will eventually burn up the motor.

once the shafts are free and lubed they go pretty fast on the high speed, you would be surprised.

i like the setting mine have.. the faster i go, the faster they go.
