i was wondering the best way to take out rust .. its about a patch of rust in a 2 foot radius .. just here and there.. should i sand all the rust down to metal .. and the prime it or spray it with a rust stopping paint ? then paint over that ?

Need more info. Like,
where on the vehicle is said rust located?
is it near structural points or is it in the middle of a panel?
do you have the courage to stick it with a screw driver to ascertain how deep the cancer is?
is this rust that has spread from an inside to outside, like paint bubbling at the rear quarter/battery box, or is it neglected outside chip damage?

My first rust repair started as an innocent paint chip touch-up, and ended with a disk grinder, pliers, hammers, compressed air, rust-catalyst primer, filler, sanding sheets, surface primer, paint and twelve weeks.
Colin

well its on the panel oposite of the sliding door and its surface rust... cuz i sanded a lil bit of it down and it went to the metal so should i sand all the rust down .. then spray over it with some primer ?

I would sand it down and make sure to get all the rust out, then spray it with dp-40 or dp-90 which is a rust preventative primer. I think PPG makes them, but I am not sure it has been awhile since I have used them.

On the surface stuff, I sanded then got a scotch brite pad with dishwashing detergent and washed it shiny shiny then bathed with lacquer thinner, three coats of grey primer with wet sand 400/600 then top-coated with. . . well, I used four coats of Chevrolet Corporate Blue #223 engine enamel (good to 500* yay), which was a very close match with my original blue, see avatar, good durable paint with a superb gloss and toughness. What a pain-in-the-neck to do the whole car.

What the bodyshops do is sandblast the area to remove the rust. If any holes appear they cut out the metal and weld in a new piece. I'm not suggesting you buy this equipment or go get this done but you get the idea of what is done.

You do not want to leave bare metal bare for long. Asap apply an etching primer and then take your time with the rest of the repair. By the sound of it you will have to feather in the paint because you are not painting the entire panel.

Is the rust on the interior of the panel opposite the sliding door? Because if it is on the interior, that would indicate you have a water leak from the window seals. Stopping that leak is your #1 priority.

If you've lived anywhere sun and age shrink the seals and it rains, there will be water damaged inside the doors at the base.
