What could cause the calipers to not release well...

Bad fluid hoses or partial plugging can sometimes cause the inner liner of the hose to pinch off internally when the brakes are released. Can happen on one or bothe hoses if improperly handled. Like letting the caliper dangle from the hose while serviceing brakes.

Or.........

The master cylinder MUST!! maintain a certian amount of play in the brake pedal linkage in order to release internal piston to such a state to allow fluid to freely flow back.

Or..........

I don't know but....... did it require and did you install a different master cylinder that initially required for drum type?...

Last thought....

Who was the kit purchased from?(new I hope!) Contact the
vendor. Most are VERY cool about these kind of things. BOL & belive
me when I say that the disc brake swap is a great change!

When you put the new disc brakes on, did the pads fit the rotors easily, with enough "looseness" to allow them free movement on the pins?

I found that when I put my kit on, I had to lightly grind two of the brake pads because they fit waaaay too tight. Haven't had any problems with my brakes since the install, and I've been very happy with them through our rainy season.
