Press down on gearshift, move all the way left towards your knee, then down. That should do it.

Or maybe something else is allowing exhaust in. Drive with vent windows open and fresh air vents open. Engine seal in good shape?

the engine seal is indeed no in yet. I don't think it is exhaust now either. Thanks for you help on reverse, I would have never found it. My old gti was down and up.

It's always fun switching cars midweek between my bus and my GTI. Half the time I get a mental block as to the forward/back issue. Wonder why VW changed after so many years. The addition of a 5th forward speed?
Hey, for those with missing ashtrays or ones with worn-off shift patterns on them (like mine), check out the replacement sticker for the ashtray here:

Or who here has jumped into an automatic and stabbed the brake with your left foot while your brain is getting ready to shift into second. Passengers get really PO'd at you when you do that. lol

Oh yes, you bring up embarrassing moments that were really funny in retrospect. '78 Buick with touchy brakes and a date who just wasn't amused when she was launched into the visor mirror with lipstick on the side of her nose. . . . . :D
