View original topic: A Generator Mystery Sound...

Just put in a brand new bosch generator into my 71. I polarized the setup and almost for too long. I held the wire on for about 3 seconds then it started to smoke :!:

Anyway now that its in I have a problem. It makes a clicking or tapping noise. Almost a grinding, but not grinding. It sounds kind of like something is loose and ratteling. I can hear it on the end closest to the pulley wheel. I have taken the wheel back off, but can't see anything? I would just figure its another noise, but is loud enough to make me not want to continue to run the engine.

Any ideas on this? I wonder if the ball bearings got flattened from it sitting for too long? Anyway I need to get it fixed before I take off on a trip with it so it doesn't blow up on the road.

Also, I checked the voltage, 15+ at idle, so it is actually working. Another oddity is that it sparks at the brushes a little which I initially thought was the cause of the clicking/rattling sound. Now Im just wondering if there is a stupid fix or do I just take it back a and pick up another new one.

The clicking is probably the brushes, and the sparking is because they haven't seated fully yet. As long as it's charging OK, run it 100-200 miles and check it again. What kind of warranty did you get with it? 90 days, 1 year? If it's still in warranty you should be covered down the road.

Excellent! I hope that is it. I will run it for a while and keep a good eye on it. I have checked everything, the bold in the back, the fan, everything. If it doesn't go away I guess I will take it back and get another one.

Thanks.
