View original topic: Synth Oil and break in

I know the arguments about Synthetic oils and vws engines. It has been proven that synth oils run cooler in vws (albeit a not very scientific test). I understand that if you run an engine then switch to use synth you will create more leaks due to the seals etc. But what if you start with synthetic oils during break in and the seals take to the synthetic and do not expand or expand normally using the synth instead? Anyone understand what i am getting at? If synthetics create more leaks after you switch, why dont you just break a motor in using synth oil so that the seals do not expand as much as they do with standard oils...

The synthetic will not allow the break in to occur as fast as it needs to...

I only see engines weep oil around the main seals with synthetic. The main reason aircooled engines running synthetic leak more is because the crankcases are not vented properly on most engines. that pressure forces oil out much more from every orfice.

what do you suggest on the breather system Jake? I breath out the heads on my motor. Will it hurt the motor to have a longer break in period?

I've talked to people that never got thier rings to seat when they switched to synthetic too soon.

I would drive it HARD for 500 miles on dino oil before switching to synthetic at a minumum. On mine, I wait for the 3000 mile mark then switch over.

Ok question here. I also want to run syntec but if it doesnt work on break in how bout a sintec blend? I'll be crankin my motor for the first time this weekend. Thanks

first off i would never run any kind of synthetic oil or blend. for break in i use a NON detergent oil then after about say 1000, maybe 1500 miles i'll switch to regular detergent oil...i never had a problem with rings seating like this...

Before I had the dyno and I installed engines I had good luck breaking rings in early.... Drive the car in 3rd gear and slowly wind it to redline, then back out of the throttle and let the car "Push" the engine..... " This does wonders for break in..

I sometimes build engines for airboats(Lycoming and continental 4 and 6 cylinders) sometimes we fire up the engine and while the boat is on the trailer the boat is towed down the road at 50 MPH for 30 minutes letting the air spin the engine... These engines have chrome cylinders and have a hard tme breaking in... Not after this!

Long story short- I'd run dino oil for atleast the first 1K and then switch to either royal purple or valvoline full synthetic... I love that stuff.

just heard story from a guy, the company who employed him used mobile one in their delivery pickup (don't know make) from new .. 1000 miles organic oil, 2qt mobile one- 3qt organic for 2000mi. then 3qt mbl 1, 2qt org for another 2000 mi. them all 5 mbl 1. 250000 mi they tore it down found very low wear. don't know if it's true but got my interest.....have three cousins who are airplane mechs who say airline uses mobil one....

Turbine engines are very different in their oiling properties. The oil I have used in Turbines was only straight 20 weight- very odd stuff.
