Okey doke, I'll try and help.
First, though, what size motor are you running? |

If you have replaced everything but the struts, then do the struts...
just struts alone cause the wicked 45mph shakes...
if it shakes at a lower speed are you sure you did the steering dampner? and the tires are balanced, rims are round/true?
who aligned it... a poor alignment/ untrained on old Vw's / shitty alignment equipment? Just because you got a sheet of paper saying it was "aligned" doesn't always mean that was done right |

Something aint right.
I just went through a bad case of the shimmies.
I did not change out all the ball joints. Although I did replace a couple of loose tie rod ends. I snugged up the steering box a bit and even replaced the shocks. The shocks are placed in oil inside of the strut, but any leakage from the shaft indicates shock cartridge failure. Also a push pull on the front bumper should immediately stop when let go and be noticeable that the shocks are performing their duties.
Heck I even got one of those 4X4 Rancho shimmy shocks and did some creative attachment. (that's a story in and of itself how it was not geometrically centered so every time the suspension went up or down it tended to pull the steering accordingly...Yee ha!) Didn't work!
I bought the best tires (round and little balancing needed)I could find.
And a lifetime balance agreement.
I went through a bunch of rims from my local used part supplies till I found the pair with the right offset that ran true.
Each time I made another attempt it would help a little. Each re-balance would effect the speed at which it happened. Once or twice the guy on the balancer screwed up and I had a senior employee re-do it after once around the block.
I found that my camber was too positive(?) And as soon as I let the wheels go a little wide at the bottom, and reset the toe in for the change the shimmy was gone
Well maybe just the slightest hint while doing a hard freeway onramp curve every so often. But no shimmy. |
