I'm debating getting a classic vw bug. What search words would help me find the information needed.
Pre '67 vs 68-72
maintence on type 1
swap options
fair market value
Is there a FAQ section for all these questions?

Fwiw, i don't have the faith that my current car(smart fortwo) is going to last 200k regardless of how i drive it. As cheap as a rebuild on a vw type 1 is and how simple an engine swap is, i wouldn't worry.

Start here:

Then here for all kinds of factory tech info:

Then here, and find the kind/type of car you like:

Once you've figured that out, go to that forum, and start reading the Stickys
Then become familiar with the Search feature. YOu can search the entire site from the home page, or search within individual forums. Search is your very best friend on The Samba. You will almost always get an answer quicker by searching, than asking.

There's no such thing as fair market value for a 40+ year old car. What's "fair" will be personal to the parties involved in the transaction. As for market value; Lots will depend on where you are or where you're looking to buy from. A decent car in the Rust belt will cost more than the same car on the Left coast. But always, always, spend more for the most complete, least rusty car you can find and afford. Doing otherwise will cost you more and get you less, in the long haul.

There's a lot to consider when "debating getting a classic vw bug". Do you like performing your own maint? A classic vw bug will require LOTS more attention than a Smart. If you don't like doing that stuff, having a fat wallet helps.
If you DO like doing that stuff, some parts will not be available at the local Autozone or Pep Boys. You'll likely have to order on-line. That opens a whole 'nother can-o-worms about who to buy from, who to avoid, price vs. quality vs. availability.

Another thing that will help you here, is to grow a thick skin. The vast majority of folks on here are very experienced, knowledgeable and helpful. Sometimes they are sarcastic, smart-ass, wise-guys, with communication issues. Often, they are simultaneously both. Having a thick skin helps.

Welcome!
