I am doing a pan off restoration of a 66 Beetle. I was wondering if it would be easier and better to build the engine and assemble it to the chassis, then put the body on, or put the body on and then build the engine and put it in? I already know that this will take me a couple years and I don't want the engine to have to sit for a long time, but I don't want to scratch the paint or anything either. Thanks.

personally I left the engine out until I had the body back on. Just seemed easier to put the body back on without the engine, and less chances for scratching something up. Good luck on your resto, and remember: put everything in bags or boxes and mark everything you can, this will make for an easier re-assembly.

Just put the engine on, hand tighten the four bolts and then take it off again just before you put the body back on.

I am leaving mine off until it is completely painted, putting the motor in would chance getting overspray on it, the exhause, etc.
