I'm not exactly sure what the issue is with the Webers, but it almost sounded like you removed the aluminum float cover portion of the carb (please tell me you didn't!) Velocity stacks are definitely a bonus, and different lengths can help fine tune the carb for different rpm power bands. Essential? Nah - but worth it IMHO. If you need correct stacks - try to find INTERCO in New Jersey (or New York?) This company has switched owners several times over the last few decades - but I've always found them to be top notch in the Weber consumables dep't.
Different filter housings may mount differently - and make sure you have plenty of room between the tops of the stacks and the filter lid - a MINIMUM of 3/4" - I prefer even more when possible. Here's how my 40 IDF carbs appear from top to bottom:
chrome K&N style air filter cover with wing nut
air filter element
velocity stacks (bolted through base of filter ass'y into carb lid)
air filter base (bolted to carb lid)
paper seal between chrome filter base and carb lid
carb
Hope this helps - although your query was a bit confusing to me

I recently put in a set of dual 40idf webers. The kits usually don't come with velocity stacks from what I saw because they dont assume they will be used full on race engines.
I can try to find a picture of how I had it set up, or maybe you can email a pic of what you did. I can tell you that the kits come with a metal cover for the top of the webers that isn't used when you put the filters on. Maybe you put yours on and that is why you have a gap. The carb top should have the carb, then a cardboard spacer, then the top of the carb, then another spacer, then the air filters on top of that. There should be no gap. |
