What type of compression gauge do you have a rubber push in type or threaded type any way adjust the valve's and remove spark plugs and put the gauge on the cylinder you are checking first then have a friend crank engine for about 10 sec and you should have a good reading.

Procure a threaded-end high quality gauge.
Warm up engine to operating temperature.
Pull plugs. Pull ignition wires off #15 at coil.
Jam open carburetor linkage.
Thread gauge CAREFULLY into spark plug opening, dab a little
oil from the dipstick each test to keep the threads lubricated!
Crank engine for 7-10 pulses.
You are looking for 100 psi + on upright engines with no more than a
15% differential between any two cylinders.
Type 4 is different, I think you have the upright 1600.
Reinstall plugs on a cool engine dab threads on plugs too.
Put wires back on coil. UN JAM carb linkage.
Let us know what your readings are.
