Here's a pic of the $500 '70 I bought last fall...sorry for the poor quality pic, but I've got a cheap ass digital camera. It's in real decent shape given it sat for about eight years or so before my buddy Roger Colton and I towed it out of the lady's driveway (that was a feat it and of itself).
Hoping to get CB's drop spindles and disc brakes in the front and to finish my 1776 engine to put in back.
According to the owner's manual it came from Downtown L.A. Volkswagen...anyone know if they're still around or if they changed names?

Open the picture in the gallery and right cilck on it. At the bottom of the box that pops up will be "Properties". Click it. A box will appear with the information about the picture. Copy the address from there. I don't know if this is the intended way to do it, but it works. Then don't forget your IMG tags around the address. [img]yourpictureaddresshere.jpg[/img]
Next time you post, try it, and click preview to see if it worked before you submit. |

| Lookin' good. Considering how long mine has been off the road, even the smallest amount of progress is impressive. Glad to see you went with the disc brakes up front. No need to go fast if you can't stop fast  |

right now i'm not working on anything, we sold our house and had to put everything including the buses in storage while we bum around at friends houses.
after i get settled i need to tie up some loose ends on the 57 and then on to the the 64 bus http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/85157.jpg , it's been sitting 20 years. i hope to get it on the road this summer. also just picked up a 68 double cab out river rd too. still trying to figure out where to start with that one, and what approach to take. |

My most recent pic of the car... next step: paint and bodywork!
Yeah, sure, it's a fat chick, but I'm into this car for minimal money thus far (I'm sure this will change after body and paint, lol). Only bummer is the alloys are likely to go bye bye, as they are interfering with my front suspension. A word to the wise out there: be careful in your selection of rims if you run CB dropped spindles. In my case, narrowing the beam won't help.

Not entirely true. You're probably running into the ball joint clearance problem, right? where the lower balljoint is hitting the inner lip of the wheel?
I grinded our balljoint and got the wheels to fit on my lady'd bug. If you don't like that idea, you can get spacers for your front wheels. Space them out a half inch per side, and then stick a narrowed beam on there to make up the difference (and a little extra, like maybe a 2 inch beam with those wheels)
If I were you, I'd grind the trailing arm just a little bit, like 1/4 inch at the most. you usually just have to grind the corner off, which doesnt' weaken it hardly at all. Thats the cheapest way. |

Not sure if I can afford to go down that road, due to $$$ (narrowed beam) This car has been intended to be a "low budget" project, but isn't that how they all start out? In all seriousness, the only spacers I've seen push out the wheels a max of 3/8"... available through CB Performance (either 5/16 or 3/8" thickness available), which won't get me clear from the visual perspective. I hate buying parts and finding out they don't get me where I need to be. |
