I recently built my motor, its a 1641 engle 100, dual vac advance dizzy, 34 pict carb, external oil filter. To date the motor has about 160 miles on it. The oil light will come on when its at idle but as soon as you give it some gas it will go off, when Im driving it and I come to a stop it will come on within seconds. So what should I do? I was thinking of trying this:
1. Advance the timing 2. Advance carb idle 3. Mess with the air fuel mixture 4. Inspect the oil pump gears. The oil sending unit is brand new and has been switched out with two others and it does the same thing. The spin on oil filter that is on the motor is the same one that was used for the break in of the motor- with all that said should I proceed in this order or take a different approach, thanks |

yeah an oil filter is cheap enough, what brand filter do you have on it? what designation? and what weight of oil?
desrcibe in detail what all was done in your rebuild? any machine work to the case? or just new bearings? could be a bearing/ case problem....
have you checked the oil pressure releif valve(s)
if the timing is set correct don't advance it any further. |

| I wasn't really sure about when to change the filter( I guess that will be number 1 on the list)? I did change the oil whick was 10-30. The case was alignbored to .20, I used all new bearings, which included double thrust cam bearings, I had my rear bearing micd so it would be perfect on the rear, I also had my mechanic set the end play on it . The oil pressure relief valves i sanded down with emry cloth and with no oil on them slid effortlessly in the case, i also used new springs in them. |

well, that all sounds good so the mystery deepens...
see what changing the filter will do, and what kind of oil pump filter set up is it?
what speed is it idling at and does it idle smooth? or act like it wants to die?
do you have any way to check the oil pressure with a manual ( no sending unit) gauge? |

| Did you actually try getting an actual pressure reading with a PG? Sometimes, a bad pressure sender can give a false indication of pressure. If you are taking the oil pump out, measure how far into the case the outlet hole sits..... If it sits further in than the hole it lines up to, it could cause oil to leak back into the case. It's a problem common on newer cases, but if it is an old stock case, you should be fine (except for the great mystery of low oil pressure). |

I have a wix filter on the engine, once its warmed up it just idles nicely I dont have any way of checking the oil pressure besides buying a gauge.
