I have a typr IV case with the engin numbers removed. Its a bare empt clean case. How do I tell whether its a 1.7/.18 case or a 2.0 case?
The reason is that I have this case and a set of new 1.7 P&Cs, and the cank/rods from a 1.7 engine. Im thinking that if its a 1.7 case. Ill get 1.7 heads rings and gaskets and build a 1.7. |

There is very little difference between type IV heads. I've been told you can build a 1700 in a 2L case and vice versa. Correct me if I'm wrong people who know their facts.
The main differences between these engines (besides the stroke and bore) are in the heads. VW fought to make their vehicles pass the clean air laws, and with all their tinkering, the heads changed several times durring the 70's.
I'm not sure of the actuall letters, but the way to tell what the case was (you aren't limited by this) is the letters before the number in the top beside the seam. 1700's were CA,CB,CD,CE,V,W,Z. http://www.type2.com/library/identifi/boxeng2.htm has a full list of the codes, what they were used in, the size, and what they were made for. |

I thougt that the biggest difference might be the size of the holes the pistons fit it, but I dont know.
If James is right and you can build a 1.7 in a 2L case, would you use a 1.7 or 2.0 crank/rods? |

this may help you...
http://www.type2.com/library/engineg/swapt4.htm
if you have the 1.7 pistons then get a 1.7 crank and rods.
get 1800 heads if you can find them the valves are bigger and they are supposed to be best for getting performance out of basically stock/mild carb engines |

| al dimensions on the case are the same... No differences. Take a pic of it or give me the serial number and I'll tell you what month it was made and how big it was!(Got it all memorized :P ) |

| hey all, as I said the numbers were machined off the case. Jake, is it true that 1.7 pistons would slip on to a 2 litre case? what about the difference in stroke between the 1.7/1.8s and the crankcase journals? |

The increased stroke occurs within the existing journal circle, they just offset-ground the 1700/1800 crank journals to get that extra 5mm. The case could care less what stroke is in there. The spigots are the same as well.
