View original topic: Need to get 66' bug towable

I just inherited a 66 bug that's been in the family since it was new. It was kept in Southern California until recently where it has been relocated to Southern Utah.

My uncle pushed the bug up onto his trailer by himself and brought it here, but when we went to unload the bug off the trailer it wouldn't budge. The car was in neutral, brakes off etc. But the wheels just slide on the ground and we ended up picking it up and putting in my garage.

Off the top of your heads, what problem are we running into here? Is it possible the hand brake just isn't releasing or something else has tightened up since it was loaded until it was unloaded?

I need to get it towable so I can get it to a lift and begin to work on it.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Sounds like the hand brake did not release

We've tried messing with the hand brake. Driver side rear wheel wont spin at all but passenger side will with some force.

How long was it sitting on the trailer before you tried to unload it?

I've had this happen when the wheel cylinders or rubber brake lines were so old that they froze the brakes in place.
Everything is fine until you push the brake pedal, then you are stuck.

Wheel cylinders were rusty inside so they pushed out but the springs couldn't pull them back in.
Have to get everything apart and replace cylinders.

Rubber brakes hoses were old and they were collapsed inside.
Press brakes, fluid locks the cylinders out because it can't flow backward.
This one you can usually fix by opening the bleeder valves.
Open valves, fluid shoots out from the pressure release, brakes are free.
Try this first...

Great advise.

I had to take the rear brake drum axle nut loose w/#5748 Empi tool & a big cheater bar to get some '57 wheels to turn.
