I bought a set of straight cut cam gears from cip1.com.

Yesterday I went to install them and the gear that goes on the crank is too small to be put on the crank. We heated the gear and tried to install. With no luck, we pressed the gear back off. There is a difference of .013 between the shaft and the gear. Do you have any addvice on how to get the gear on? The guy there said to heat it on stove top for 2-3 minutes but then how will I ever get it off again?

There is a special puller tool that removes them.

You could try putting the crank in the freezer for a few hours and make sure the gear is real hot. You might need to tap it down with a pipe that fits around the crank.

the way i was always taught to install the gears is 1, they HAVE to be heated if they are any good. 2. do not just heat them as this will change the temper of the gear, what my boss used to do was he had a catch with cooking oil and he would heat the gear in the oil..then when it got hot pull up the catch from the oil and take the gear with a rag and literally he could push it on the crank. we never had a problem with this way and we never had a problem with gears wearing out..hope this helps.. i am not sure of the size difference between the gear and the crank O.D. area..

.013 is way to much interferance for a press fit, even if you do heat the gear and freeze the shaft. Double check your dimensions and if you still
come up with the same .013 either send the gear back or take it to a good
machine shop and have them hone the ID of the gear to give you .003 or
.004 interferance fit.

I got the gear on to day thanks for your help. We remeasured the crank and gear it had .013 difference. We just heated it up and it went right on.

Thanks for all your help
